Get close, but keep a distance

We understand ourselves through the relations we are part of. The intimacy is the factor which sharpens the mutual understanding because we communicate through language, body language and gestures. Understanding each other precisely is extremely diffucult. On top of that, power is always a factor in relations and it is all about being able to dare work in an equal, acknowledging relationship where none of the parties is in doubt as to the formal power dimension.

The really big challenge for a leader is to establish a suitable degree of intimacy and at the same time keep a suitable distance in order thus to create the foundation for the individual to be seen, heard and understood. At the same time, a leader must be able to keep a suitable distance so that he/she has room to monoeuvre. When a leader masters this skill, an enormous momentum is created in one´s group, department, area or company.

In this talk, Kim Østergaard tells you how to establish and keep up this kind of intimacy without losing the possibility og manoeuvering.
